Happy Sunday MI Loves!
My husband and I have decided to do something neither of us have ever done before…observing Lent and fasting for 40 days and 40 nights (Wednesday, February 14 – Saturday, March 31). We are in our first year of marriage and we have been trying our best to be intentional about making sure God is the head of our union. We know that without Him we are nothing and our marriage will not sustain the evils of the world.
Lent is the 40 days leading up to Resurrection Sunday and the period symbolizes the 40 days and 40 nights Jesus spent in the wilderness fasting and praying after he was baptized. During those 40 days, he was tempted by the Devil (Matthew 4:1-2). It is during this time that people tend fast and pray in hopes of getting closer to God.
Fasting is a way of denying ourselves the excesses of life so that we might be more attuned to the Lord’s voice. It is also a way of disciplining ourselves, strengthening our “spiritual muscles”, so that when temptations arise in life, we are already used to saying “no” to our desires.
As you know, being Spiritually Bold is all about being confident and bold in asking God to do things for us but also backing up our asking with actions. God is not going to make things happen for you if you are not willing to put in the work because we know that Faith without work is dead (James 2:26).
This is my second challenge of 2018 – the first challenge was thinking of 8 things I wanted to Be Spiritually Bold about. One of my 8 things for the year is to spend more time with God and I think this will definitely help me continue to improve my relationship with Him.
MI Loves, I challenge you to give up something for Lent or add something to be disciplined (volunteer your time, donate to a cause, or give up something).
- Spend at least 30 minutes with God together for the next 40 days and thereafter
- Abstain from meats, sweets, and alcohol (Lord Jesus be a chicken bone, Oreo ice cream, and Moscato)
- Exercise together for at least 30 minutes everyday
By completing these things, we hope that God opens our eyes to help us see ways we can serve His kingdom no matter where we are. We also hope to improve in areas we have been struggling as a newlywed couple (i.e communication and expectations).
To all of MI loves, thanks for checking in with me.
